Save the Hitchin Christmas Tractor Run

Sam Collins, Lib Dem parliamentary candidate in Hitchin and Harpenden, is calling for the Government to scrap plans which would effectively ban the Hitchin Christmas tractor run as well as ploughing matches in Kimpton and Redbourn.

Just a few weeks ago many thousands of people turned out to see a wonderful display of over 100 tractors decorated in Christmas lights driving through our local towns and ending with a display in Hitchin. This event also raised well over £7,000 for the Garden House Hospice. The Government plans will threaten events such as this as well as ploughing matches in Kimpton and Redbourn, a traditional and popular feature of the farming calendar in Hitchin and Harpenden for decades.

Farmers are able to use a special lower tax type of diesel fuel called red diesel in their tractors, but from April the Government plans to make the use of that fuel for charity tractor runs and ploughing matches illegal. Changing to conventional or ‘white’ diesel requires the tractor’s fuel system to be completely flushed out, a time consuming and expensive procedure which is likely to make these community events unviable for many farmers.

Sam's petition calls on Lucy Frazer MP, Financial secretary to the Treasury, and Victoria Prentis MP, Minister of State at DEFRA, to exempt charity tractor runs and ploughing matches from the requirement to run white diesel.
